UN-Habitat Tunisia launches the SECOND national seminar & training workshop on “The Application of Urbanization’s Degree (DEGURBA) in Tunisia to Generate Comparable Urban Data

The Second National Seminar for the continuity of “Application of the Urbanization’s Degree (DEGURBA) in Tunisia to Generate Comparable Urban Data” project, allows the presentation of a global approach applied in the definition of urban and rural areas and to produce some indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda (NUA).

It is organized on February 20, 2023, in Tunis Grand Hotel, by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) in Tunisia and the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The introductory and first technical workshop on DEGURBA were conducted last year between May 24 – 27, achieving their main goal of introducing DEGURBA and its implementation workflow to the relevant national stakeholders. The National Institute of statistics is a non-administrative public organization representing a central organ in the national statistics system. Its main mission is to ensure data gathering, processing and analysis as well as disseminating statistical information in coordination with the other public statistics organizations. This seminar brings together decision-makers from different ministries, national agencies involved in the project, international organizations, as well as academic and research institutions and civil society.

The discussions will focus on the adoption of the methodology and its compatibility with the Tunisian context and situation. A technical training course will also be held in El Mouradi Palace hotel, Sousse, from February 21–24, 2023, aiming to strengthen the capacities of the participants in the application of the DEGURBA methodology and the production of urban indicators using statistical methods and spatial analysis techniques.

The beneficiaries of this training are statisticians, experts in demography, experts in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as well as experts in land use planning and urbanization. As part of its urban inclusion policy, UN-Habitat Tunisia pays particular attention to leaving no one behind, especially homeless people and migrants, who are real actors of change and cohesion within their communities.
