United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Friday about the rapidly deteriorating situation in Gaza where humanitarian conditions are worsening dramatically.
“Gaza is in a humanitarian freefall, just when it seems the situation could not get worse for Palestinians in Gaza, the suffering grows and the world watches,” he said to reporters. He mentioned that major diseases like measles, hepatitis, and poliovirus are spreading in the area, with the latter being the most urgent ones to stop.
“In recent weeks, the poliovirus has been detected in wastewater samples in Khan Younis and Deir Al-Balah. That means the virus is now circulated, with hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza at risk.” He noted that while the UN is ready to launch an urgent massive vaccination campaign, a ceasefire deal is needed to secure staff safety and transport of vaccines.
