According to the United Nations agency for reproductive and sexual health, nearly one in five young women globally was married while still a child. The UNFPA is urging countries to say “No, I do not” to child marriage—an illegal practice that is almost universally condemned yet remains widespread worldwide.
Child marriage is banned by numerous international agreements, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.
Despite these regulations, 640 million women and girls worldwide were married as children, and new child marriages continue to take place every day.
