Unpopular, increasingly, because it is ineffective. I’m speaking about the boss of the Conservative Party, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The least we can tell is that the former investment banker, married to the richest woman in the United Kingdom, has kept none of his commitments. Moreover, his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were not there either. The British thus threw them all into oblivion. It could extremely well be Sunak’s turn, much sooner than expected, judging by his crushing loss in the municipal elections against the Labor Party…
The swan song for the conservatives, after 14 years of unchallenged rule. The red of the socialists became fashionable again in England with the triumph of Labor in almost all municipal duels. This tidal surge gives wings to Labor leader Keir Starmer; the situation may quickly become untenable to the point that early legislative elections are required, even though they were planned for the end of 2024. And in the event of an election, early or not, we know what will happen to the Prime Minister, according to all the polls.
In the meantime, there is the rout of the municipal elections, which the Conservative Party will have to drink down to the dregs, with a press which has the reputation of being the fiercest in the world. The definitive results will be revealed tomorrow, Saturday May 4, but we already know that it will be a blow to the powers that be. Moreover, he is preparing for it by expecting a historic loss of 50% of conservative seats in Parliament.
This shift involves extremely powerful symbols: The example of Stoke-on-Trent, in the North, where some 70% of citizens voted in favour of leaving the European Union (Brexit), therefore for the Conservative Party . Times have changed, and the city is betting everything on Labor. Ditto for Blackpool South, where the Conservatives have reigned since 2019…
And what about the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who is heading straight for a historic record by triumphing his third term. Keir Starmer is pleased with the “fantastic results across the country” and believes Britons are now entitled to an early election. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring and what Labor will put on the table when they take back the reins of the country, but what is certain is that Brexit the subject of Charles III no longer want.
The divorce from the EU has made the British poorer to the point that some are looting food, Brexit has hit the country’s economy and finances to the point that even the health of citizens is no longer guaranteed and Third World diseases resurface, etc. In short, the English lack everything, above all they have lost their legendary pride and their phlegm. Sunak, short of solutions, attempted to entertain them by taking a very right turn…
He started to blame all the ills of the British on irregular migration. He thought he could capitalize on xenophobia, and when discontent increased in the opposition he got rid of his very unpopular Interior Minister, Suella Braverman. Then he ran headlong into the horrible project hatched by Johnson: the expulsion of asylum seekers to Rwanda, despite the recriminations of Labor elected officials and international organizations.
The hell that Sunak desired to put migrants through will not solve the country’s problems and above all it will not save the Prime Minister from a fall in the legislative elections from which he will not recover.
