US reportedly to shut down $320M Gaza aid pier

The United States is set to permanently dismantle its $320 million offshore Gaza pier, CBS News reported on Wednesday, quoting a US official. the pier will not be reconnected to the shore in Gaza due to multiple delays caused by bad weather and mechanical issues.

Even though it was only operational for 20 days since its reinstallation in May, the pier successfully transferred over 20 million pounds of aid into the enclave. While some reports suggested that it would be installed one last time to deliver the remaining aid supplies from Cyprus, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that Israel will establish another port in Ashdod, called “Pier 28.”

“The pier has always been intended as a temporary solution, and it will conclude its mission soon, but as of today, I don’t have any announcements to make in terms of when the mission will officially conclude,” Pentagon Press Secretary Patrick Ryder said Tuesday.
