Vaccines and autism: WHO debunks a persistent myth

The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again confirmed that there is no scientific evidence linking vaccines to autism spectrum disorders, countering claims that have recently resurfaced in public debate.

This reaffirmation comes as the WHO highlights that vaccination has saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years, making it one of the most effective public health interventions worldwide.

On 27 November 2025, the WHO’s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety conducted a comprehensive review of available scientific evidence. Experts examined 31 major international studies published between 2010 and August 2025, drawing on data from multiple countries and populations.

The review covered vaccines in general as well as those containing thiomersal, a preservative sometimes used to prevent contamination in multi-dose vials. The findings were unequivocal: no causal relationship exists between vaccination and autism.

The WHO stressed the importance of combating misinformation and urged the public to rely on scientific evidence to maintain trust in immunization programmes.
