General Joseph Aoun, aged 61, was elected as the President of Lebanon on January 9, 2025, concluding a presidential vacancy of over two years. A former commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Army, he obtained 99 votes out of 128 during the parliamentary session.
Born in 1963 in Beirut, Joseph Aoun graduated from the Lebanese Military Academy and continued his training in the United States, where he earned a master’s degree in military sciences. He rose through the ranks of the Lebanese Army, holding various command positions before being appointed as the Army’s Commander-in-Chief in 2017. Under his leadership, the army led operations against extremist groups and strengthened national security.
His election comes amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic and political crisis, aggravated by regional tensions and internal challenges. Joseph Aoun has committed to pursuing judicial reforms, fighting corruption, and reinforcing the state’s sovereignty, especially concerning the control of arms outside official institutions.
