Two massive wildfires threatening Los Angeles from the east and west have consumed about 10,000 houses and other structures. The fires continued to blaze on Thursday night for the third successive evening, despite a reduction in strong winds.
The Palisades Fire, located between Santa Monica and Malibu in western Los Angeles, and the Eaton Fire, near Pasadena to the east, are among the most devastating in the city’s history. Combined, they have burned over 34,000 acres, leaving entire neighbourhoods in ashes.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office reported late Thursday that the death toll from the fires had increased to 10, up from seven earlier in the day.
Robert Luna, the county sheriff, stated in a press conference that the number of fatalities is expected to increase.
Officials reported that the Eaton Fire has damaged or destroyed between 4,000 and 5,000 buildings, while the Palisades Fire has impacted or destroyed approximately 5,300 additional structures.
Private weather forecasting company AccuWeather estimated the economic damages and losses from the fires to range between $135 billion and $150 billion, signalling a challenging recovery process and significantly increased insurance costs for homeowners.
