The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released a new and alarming report showing that North Africa and the Middle East experienced their hottest year on record in 2024.
According to the WMO, these regions are warming twice as fast as the global average, placing them among the most climate-vulnerable areas in the world.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that this rapid temperature rise is acting as a “crisis multiplier,” straining societies already suffering from water scarcity, desertification, extreme heatwaves and deteriorating ecosystems.
The organization urged urgent mitigation measures, improved water-resource management, and accelerated adaptation to escalating climate risks.
