WMO: In the Arab world, temperatures are rising twice as fast as the global average

According to the first report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the state of the climate in the Arab region, published in early December, the rise in temperatures is accelerating and its repercussions are intensifying.

It adds that the Arab world experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, and that the pace of warming has accelerated over recent decades, alongside more intense heatwaves and droughts, as well as storms and episodes of extreme rainfall.

“Temperatures are rising twice as fast as the global average, with intense heatwaves bringing society to its knees,” a statement from the WMO says.

According to the WMO, these climate threats overlap with current socio-economic challenges such as rapid urbanization, conflict, poverty and population growth—underscoring the urgency of strengthening resilience and investing in risk reduction and water security.
