3 years in prison for Nabil Karoui on foreign financing charges

The Criminal Chamber specializing in financial corruption cases of the Tunis Court of Appeal convicted Nabil Karoui, former presidential candidate and founder of the Qalb Tounes party, to three years in jail for “foreign financing”.

Habib Torkhani, spokesperson for the Tunis Court of Appeal, also announced that three other individuals, including Salma Smaoui, the wife of Nabil Karoui, were sentenced to the same sentence.

In addition to their prison sentence, those convicted are prohibited from running for presidency for five years.

This decision follows an appeal from the prosecution after the defendants initially received a one-year prison sentence at first instance.
