7.2-magnitude quake strikes off Indonesian coast

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS)said on Wednesday.

The quake’s epicenter was registered 154 kilometers northwest of the town of Tobelo on the island of Halmahera, at a depth of 60 kilometers.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert following the quake. “Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters … hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter,” the agency stressed.
