7.6-magnitude earthquake hits Caribbean Sea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 shook the Caribbean Sea 209 kilometers southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The US National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) issued an advisory for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands whereas a potential threat hazard was issued for Haiti, Cuba, Belize, and the Bahamas.

The quake occurred at 6:23 pm ET at a depth of 10 kilometers. According to the tsunami warning system, there is currently no danger for the US east coast, the Gulf of Mexico states, and the coast of Canada. At the same time, the center stated hazardous tsunami waves could affect coasts within 1,000 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.
