Abbas pays tribute to Pope as ‘friend of Palestinian people’

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas paid tribute to Pope Francis, who died earlier today, calling him a “faithful friend of the Palestinian people.”

“Today, we lost a faithful friend of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights,” Abbas said as cited by Wafa, stressing that the pope “recognised the Palestinian state and authorised the Palestinian flag to be raised in the Vatican.”

The pope died this morning at the age of 88.
