U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed himself throughout an overnight raid by U.S. special operations forces in Syria.
Baghdadi died beside three of his children by blasting an explosives-laden vest when he escaped U.S. forces into a dead-end tunnel during the attack, which took place in the Idlib region in northwest Syria, trump announced in a televised address to the nation from the White House.
U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper maintained the purpose of the operation had been to apprehend Baghdadi if possible but kill him if necessary.
Esper said two U.S. forces sustained secondary wounds during the operation but have already returned to duty. Trump said a military dog was wounded.
