AFCON 2024-Group D: Burkina Faso and Mauritania qualifies, Algeria out of race

After Group C at the beginning of the evening, this 3rd and final day of the 1st round of the AFCON indicated to us the names of 3 qualified selections from Group D for round 16.

In a dire position, Algeria was incapable of avoiding the nightmare of Douala. Two years have passed but the Fennecs are still not reassuring, even with 13 minutes of added time. Therefore, it is the turn of the trio Angola, Burkina Faso and probably Mauritania to play the 2nd round of the knockout phase of this 34th Ivorian edition.

Concerning the Algeria-Mauritania Arab derby, played at la Paix in Bouaké stadium (40,000 seats), where the Fennecs were under pressure and confronted with the necessity to win by at least two goals to end among the first 2 places directly qualify, whatever the result of the 2nd match of this group. Final result: a defeat (1-0) and a second consecutive elimination in the group stage after AFCON 2021.

As for the Mourabitounes, they managed to win the 2019 champions even though they have not won any of their last 3 confrontations against the Algerians (2 defeats, 1 draw), nor any match in their AFCON history. Successful mission to build the feat and make history!

(In the event of a draw, Algeria will also be ensured to finish among the best thirds.)

Let’s move on to the duel between the Angola-Burkina Faso qualifiers, played at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussokro, which promises to be incredibly tough since a draw would not necessarily be a good calculation knowing that this result will profit Algeria who will be the leader of the group in the event of a victory against Mauritania by more than one goal.

To first place, this meeting ended in a victory for the Angolans (2-0).
