Algeria: Action at the UN Security Council
Algeria has disclosed its intent to convene a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to secure the implementation of the recent decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel. This initiative comes following the ICJ judgment on the accusations of genocide brought against Israel.
Application of the ICJ Decision
The Algerian Foreign Ministry expressed Algeria’s permanent mission to the United Nations had obtained instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to request the crucial meeting. The goal is to give enforceable effect to the ICJ judgment.
Support for South Africa’s Action
Algeria also voiced its support and gratitude to South Africa for having referred the matter to the ICJ. The ministry emphasised that the ICJ judgment marks the start of the end of the era of impunity.
ICJ decision on Gaza
The ICJ, located in The Hague, ordered Israel to take measures to stop any act of “genocide” and to allow humanitarian access to Gaza. The procedure was initiated by South Africa, which considered that Israel was violating the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention.
