Algeria: More than 8,000 detainees pardoned by President

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune granted a pardon to more than 8,000 prisoners on the eve of Independence Day, commemorated on July 5. This decision was made official by the inking of two presidential decrees, as announced by the Presidency of the Republic on July 4.

According to the official press release, “The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, signed two presidential decrees, after consultation with the Superior Council of the Judiciary, the first linking to pardon measures in favour of 8,049 prisoners and the second concerning detainees having obtained pardons. teaching or training diplomas during the year 2023-2024.”

However, this presidential pardon excludes various categories of convicts. People tried for crimes related to terrorism, homicide, escape, espionage, and conspiracies against state authority will not profit from this measure. In addition, convictions for identity theft, attacks against ascendants or minors, rape, kidnapping, human trafficking, organ trafficking, migrant trafficking, drug trafficking, smuggling, and corruption are also excluded from this grace.

This measure comes in a strong symbolic context, on the eve of the celebrations of Algeria’s independence, therefore marking a gesture of clemency towards a large part of the prison population, while maintaining strict restrictions for serious crimes.
