Algeria Rejects Washington’s Stance on Western Sahara

In an official statement released today, Tuesday, April 9, 2025, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs voiced its deep regret over the United States’ reaffirmation of its position concerning the Moroccan autonomy plan as a solution to the Western Sahara conflict, considering it a violation of international legitimacy principles and the United Nations Charter.

The statement stated that Algeria took note of the U.S. State Department’s confirmation, which officially documents the U.S. position, expressing dissatisfaction with this stance by a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which is expected to respect international law and the decisions of the Council in particular.

Right to Self-Determination: Algeria’s Steadfast Position

Algeria reiterated in its statement that the Western Sahara issue remains an unfinished decolonization process, and the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people remains an inalienable right, guaranteed by the United Nations Charter and the General Assembly’s resolutions, especially Resolution 1514, which calls for the independence of colonial countries and peoples.

The statement stressed that the Sahrawi people have not yet been allowed the opportunity to freely express their will regarding their political future, stressing that any solutions outside the framework of international legitimacy are invalid and only serve to complicate the resolution of the conflict.

Call for Respect of International Legitimacy

Algeria concluded its statement by reaffirming that its position on the Western Sahara issue remains firm and unchanged, adding that the dispute can only be resolved through the respect of the principle of self-determination, as outlined in core international references, including the United Nations Charter, General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, and the International Court of Justice.

Commitment to Supporting People’s Right to Self-Determination

Algeria underscored its unwavering support for the right of peoples to self-determination within the framework of its respect for the global principles of justice and the rights of colonized peoples, reiterating its position in favor of international legitimacy as the only path to a just and lasting solution to the conflict.
