August 13: Tunisia celebrates 67th anniversary of Women’s Day

On August 13th Tunisia celebrates the 67th anniversary of Tunisia’s Women’s Day, an important day that honours the achievements, rights and contributions of Tunisian women to society.

Since independence in 1956, Tunisian women have fought for equal rights in a society that has gone through deep political, social and cultural transformations. This fight culminated in the promulgation of the Code of Personal Status in 1956, which was revolutionary for its time by bestowing women considerably increased rights, especially in matters of marriage, divorce and inheritance.

However, despite the progress made over the past decades, women in Tunisia continue to confront challenges such as gender-based violence, economic inequalities, and persistent gender stereotypes.

Tunisian society, accordingly, remains committed to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
