The Australian Labor Party has decided to suspend Senator Fatima Payman from her parliamentary group in the Senate.
The move came after Payman backed a Green proposal to recognize the state of Palestine as an independent entity.
According to a report by Australian channel ABC News issued on Sunday, Payman’s support for the recognition of Palestine has sparked dispute within the Labor Party.
In reaction, Australian Prime Minister and party leader Anthony Albanese suspended Payman from all meetings of his Senate group indefinitely.
Fatima Payman, elected in 2022 as Australia’s first veil-wearing senator, was the sole member of her party to support the Greens’ proposal.
This proposal, rejected for the second time by the Senate on June 25, 2024, aimed to officially recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.
