Biden: Putin wants to re-establish Soviet Union

United States President Joe Biden accused on Thursday Vladimir Putin of wanting to “re-establish the Soviet Union” with his country’s intervention in Ukraine.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference, Biden noted that Putin’s speech prior to his announcement about Moscow’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk People’s Republics’ (LPR) prove his intentions. The president noted that “his ambitions are completely contrary to the place the rest of the world has arrived,” but declined to comment on the question of whether he is calling on China to help the diplomatic isolation of Russia.

Biden also argued he has not underestimated Putin’s intentions and expressed his belief the sanctions the US and its allies imposed on Russia will have an effect on its future actions.
