Borrell: Israel provoking famine in Gaza

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on Monday accused Israel of deliberately provoking famine in the Gaza Strip by preventing trucks carrying humanitarian aid from entering the enclave.

Speaking at the European Humanitarian Forum 2024, Borrell underlined that “starvation is used as a weapon of war,” adding that “in Gaza, we are no longer on the brink of famine, we are in a state of famine.”

The EU’s top diplomat further noted that it is unacceptable that “hundreds of trucks” with humanitarian aid are waiting on Gaza borders while people are dying. Additionally, he reiterated that Israel must open more land crossings so that aid can reach civilians in the war-torn enclave.
