EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, emphasized Thursday the critical situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, urging EU member states to bolster their support.
Borrell labeled the ongoing war against Ukraine, which is nearing its two-year mark, as the “biggest threat to European security,” highlighting Russia’s persistent strategy to fragment the country. “We should do more to support Ukraine,” Borrell stated, cautioning that failure to act could lead to greater costs for the EU.
In addition, he addressed the situation in Gaza and the broader Middle East. He underscored the importance of backing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and warned against collective punishment of the Palestinian people. Despite ongoing investigations, Borrell clarified that the EU Commission has not decided to halt funding to UNRWA.
