Speaking at a press conference, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday that the new variant of the coronavirus identified in the United Kingdom could be “up to 70% more transmissible” than the known strain.
The virus has been spreading more rapidly in London, likely driven by the new variant, Johnson said as he warned that current evidence suggests the new strain is “passed on significantly easier.” However, the prime minister highlighted that there is no evidence at the moment that the new COVID-19 variant is more lethal or that the current vaccine will be any less effective.
