Canada has shifted direction and voted in support of a United Nations resolution denouncing Israel for its occupation of Palestinian Territories.
The vote signals a significant deviation for Canada, which has rejected to support considerably the same resolution through 14 consecutive votes since Stephen Harper came to power in 2006.
An executive at Global Affairs Canada announced the vote conveys a message that Canada does not conform with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement on Monday that Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories are “not, per se, inconsistent with international law.”
