United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Mandy Cohen said on Thursday that the surge in respiratory illness in China is not caused by a “new pathogen.” In her testimony before the House of Representatives, she said the rise in infections is caused by existing microbes, including COVID-19 variants and the flu.
Cohen reassured lawmakers that the CDC has an office in China and that US officials have been in contact with it and other sources to “ensure that we’re understanding the situation there.” She explained that the number of cases, especially among children, has increased following years of COVID-19 lockdowns, when people did not circulate freely.
