Chile has asked the International Court of Justice in the Hague (ICJ) to allow it to join the South African case against Israel, accusing it of committing genocide in Gaza. Chile also asked the court to impose measures to protect against sustainable and serious harm to the Palestinian people under the UN genocide charter.
On 29 December 2023, South Africa filed an application instituting proceedings against Israel, stating violations of the Genocide Convention in relation to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Several countries have since joined the case, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, the State of Palestine, Spain, and Turkiye.
