China offers to be mediator for Iran, Pakistan

Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that if necessary, it is ready to mediate talks between Iran and Pakistan following the latest events that affected the relations between the two countries.

“We are paying close attention to the development of the situation. China has always advocated that relations between countries should be handled following the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. Iran and Pakistan are close neighbours, friendly countries to China, and countries with important influence,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning remarked at a press conference.

She noted that Beijing hopes both sides can remain “calm” and practice “restraint,” to avoid further escalation.
