China ready to take ‘strong measures’ over US CHIPS bill

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said on Friday that it will take “strong measures to safeguard its legitimate rights” after the United States Congress passed the Chips and Science Act with the goal to help the country compete with China in the technology field.

Beijing warned the US chips legislation could disrupt global semiconductor supply chains, as well as international trade. The ministry also urged the US to ensure the act is in compliance with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives passed the Chips and Science Act, which seeks to provide US chip manufacturers with $52 billion. The bill now awaits US President Joe Biden’s signature.
