Colombia to propose recognizing Palestine as independent state at UN

Colombian President Gustavo Petro (pictured) said on Monday that he intends to suggest to the United Nations to recognize Palestine as an independent state amid “the carnage unleashed by [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.”

Petro also stated that his country would not buy weapons from any country that voted against a ceasefire in Gaza or abstained on the matter. “Democratic and progressive countries must fight to preserve international humanitarian law to prevent barbarism from expanding in the world,” he insisted.
