Death toll due to floods in western Europe goes over 60

The number of people that have passed away due to flooding in western Europe reached over 60 on Thursday, with Germany bearing the brunt of the floods with 58 people dead.

Heavy rainfall and storms over the past few days prompted rivers and reservoirs to burst their banks, after which they began to flood the surrounding areas. Houses collapsed as a result of the floods, while rescue operations were hampered by obstructed streets and internet and power outages across the region.

German authorities have warned the public to expect more deaths as the days pass by, with the country’s chancellor Angela Merkel predicting that the number of people that died will be large, as she passed her condolences to the affected families.
