(TAP) – The Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, Wednesday, “strongly” condemned the “criminal” and “cowardly” attack carried out, Tuesday evening, near of the Grhiba synagogue, on the island of Djerba.
In a statement, the employers’ organization commended the “rapid action” and “effectiveness” of the security forces.
“Despite these criminal and vile attacks, Tunisians will always remain attached to the values of tolerance and fraternity, rejecting all forms of extremism,” the same source said.
Two pilgrims (a Tunisian citizen and a French national) as well as three National Guard agents were killed during the terrorist attack, on Tuesday evening, near the Ghriba synagogue in Djerba, according to the Interior Ministry.
“The attacker is an agent of the Naval National Guard of Aghir Djerba who killed his colleague with his personal weapon, before seizing the victim’s weapon and its ammunition.”
The agent then attempted to get access to the vicinity of La Ghriba Synagogue and sporadically opened fire at the security units stationed at the scene who retaliated and prevented him from getting into the synagogue before shooting him down.
According to the Interior Ministry, four security guards and four other civilians were also wounded in the attack. They were rushed to the hospital to receive the necessary treatment.
The synagogue and its surroundings were cordoned off. Visitors inside and outside have been secured. An investigation is underway to disclose the motives behind this terrorist attack.
