ECOWAS suspends Niger Republic

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS/CEDEAO) has officially announced the suspension of the Republic of Niger’s membership until constitutional order is restored in the country. This decision was communicated in a statement released by the regional body, following the resolutions made at the summit of heads of state and government held on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement clarified that up until the 64th ordinary session on December 10, 2023, the Conference of Heads of State and Government regarded the situation in Niger as a coup attempt. Despite this characterization, Mohamed Bazoum was still recognized as the President of the Republic of Niger and Head of State.

The statement further explained, “Due to this position, Niger was not suspended from ECOWAS’ decision-making bodies, and members of Bazoum’s government were authorized to represent Niger in ECOWAS’ statutory meetings.” This clarification underscores the nuanced approach ECOWAS has taken in addressing the political situation in Niger while maintaining recognition of President Bazoum and engaging with the country at the regional level.
