The Ministries of Oil and Electricity in Egypt today reported a one-hour increase in power outages across the country for Tuesday.
This measure is due to the combination of preventive maintenance work on the part of the regional gas distribution networks and an upsurge in local electricity consumption caused by high temperatures.
Overwhelming heat
Temperatures in Cairo soared to about 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, and are expected to continue to rise in the coming days.
This intense heatwave has increased electricity demand, deepening the country’s current energy supply challenges.
Reasons for outages
In a joint press release, the ministries clarified that this exceptional measure was required to maintain the operational efficiency of the national electricity and natural gas transmission networks.
“This requires an increase in the load reduction period today only for an additional hour, to maintain the operational efficiency of the national electricity transmission network and the national natural gas network,” they said, according to Reuters.
