EU to impose sanctions on Russia on Tuesday

European Union’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced on Tuesday that sanctions against Russia will be imposed in the afternoon after a further escalation of the crisis in Ukraine. Yesterday, he warned the EU will “respond strongly” if Moscow recognizes the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

“Russian troops have entered in Donbass. We consider Donbass part of Ukraine… I wouldn’t say that [it is] a full-fledged invasion, but Russian troops are on Ukrainian soil,” Borrell stated. He added the Council will decide on immediate measures against Russia, but “it does not mean we are going to make all our decisions today.”
