Ex-Chilean president Pinera killed in helicopter crash

Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has died in a helicopter crash in the southern part of the country, his office confirmed on Tuesday.

The accident happened in the Los Rios region. Chilean Interior Minister Carolina Toha disclosed during the national address that three other passengers who were on board the helicopter managed to escape the aircraft.

The 74-year-old politician held the position of Chile’s president in two separate terms, first from 2010 to 2014, and subsequently from 2018 to 2022.
