First two cases of Omicron registered in India

Joint secretary of India’s Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal, said on Thursday that the country has officially recorded the first infections with the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

During a news briefing, he explained that two people tested positive, adding that their “primary and secondary contacts” are being traced and tested.

According to the latest update, there were 9,765 new cases in India, where the Delta variant is the dominant strain. The country’s death toll rose by 477 during the last 24 hours.
