Five Arrested Following Sinking of Migrant Boat off Djerba Coast

Five people were apprehended in connection with the sinking of a boat carrying migrants off the island of Djerba which took place on Monday. According to local authorities, these people are suspected of organising this clandestine crossing.

The arrests took place outside the island of Djerba; a man and his wife were captured. With these new arrests, the total number of suspects arrested in this case is now new, according to the spokesperson for the Médenine Court of First Instance.

This drama relaunches the debate on the networks of smugglers who organize perilous crossings in the Mediterranean, often with makeshift boats, endangering the lives of many migrants.

Tunisian authorities are continuing their inquiry to dismantle these networks and prevent future tragedies at sea.
It was found that the two suspects transported African migrants from sub-Saharan countries from the Kasserine region in exchange for money to the governorate of Sfax, to help them illegally cross maritime borders.

On the instruction of the public prosecutor, the two suspects were arrested and the necessary legal measures were taken against them.
