Former German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble dies at 81

Former German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble died aged 81, his family told DPA news agency on Wednesday.

Schaeuble was a member of the Christian Democratic Party since 1965 and became a member of the Bundestag parliament in 1972. A significant part of his political career was devoted to German reunification.

Schaeuble became finance minister in former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet in 2009 and led the German financial sector during the eurozone debt crisis.
