France – Costly strike at Eiffel Tower: Between 1 and 2 million euros in losses

After a six-day closure due to a worker strike, the Eiffel Tower welcomed visitors again on Sunday, February 25, overlapping with the school holidays. Jean-François Martins, president of the Eiffel Tower Operating Company (Sete), reported on BFMTV that the monument incurred economic losses assessed between 1 and 2 million euros as it could not host around a hundred thousand visitors during this period.

The strike was driven by workers ‘ apprehensions concerning Sete’s current management practices, which they feared could steer the company towards important challenges. Finally, a settlement was reached between the unions and management, part of which includes the creation of a committee to oversee the economic model and investments, convening biannually.

Moreover, a substantial investment plan of 380 million euros has been outlined for the tower’s renovation and maintenance up to 2031. This plan earmarks an immediate fund of 145 million euros for critical updates, including elevator renovations, repainting, and enhancing accessibility.

To fund these essential upgrades, Sete has decided to execute a 20% hike in ticket prices, increasing the adult rate from €29.40 to a higher figure. Martins assures that despite the increase, the pricing will remain competitive on an international scale.

This price adjustment is designed to completely finance the anticipated renovations, underscoring the vital role of international visitors in the upkeep and restoration of this iconic structure.
