France: In middle of Ramadan, fight between worshipers in front of a mosque, 3 injured with knives

Sometimes Muslims’ best enemies are themselves. And what can we say when acts of violence are perpetrated in front of “the house of God”, the mosque and in the middle of the month of Ramadan, a period meant to embody mercy, tolerance, kindness, forgiveness, and love for one’s neighbour? The incident at the Goussainville mosque in Val-d’Oise (Paris region) defies understanding and will unfortunately leave a lasting mark on the Muslim community. The faithful of the mosque, who were assumed to come to pray and return home peacefully, came to a confrontation and the knife came out. What was that weapon doing there? Mystery. What would have occurred if the attacker had come with a gun? According to information from the newspaper Le Parisien, the conflicts took place around 10 p.m., the police were called to stop a skirmish between approximately thirty individuals in front of one of the mosques in the town where the Turkish community has his habits.

The police had to use a tear gas grenade and a stun grenade to put an end to the widespread fight. Two 21-year-old men were stabbed in the arm and shoulder respectively. They were brought to Gonesse Hospital for treatment. Their vital prognosis is not compromised, fortunately…

But a third faithful, aged 23, was severely beaten in the back; his lung may be punctured. His life was not in danger when he was admitted to the hospital, but his wound became an absolute emergency. He was transported to the La Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (Paris 13th arrondissement) by the Smur.

According to victims’ testimonies, tension in this Goussainville mosque between two groups of faithful from the Turkish community. They went outside to sort out their misunderstandings. The tone then allegedly grew and one of the protagonists drew a knife. According to the same sources, it all began with a sideways glance in the mosque.

The three injured people did not wish to file a complaint and refused to provide investigators with information about the alleged attacker, who disappeared after his crimes. But we can count on the fine sleuths to catch up very quickly…
