France: Paris bans two pro-Palestinian demonstrations

Paris police chief, Laurent Nuñez, took the decision to bar two pro-Palestinian demonstrations which were scheduled for Thursday, October 12 in Paris, noting concerns related to the risk of disturbances to public order. This announcement was made by the Paris police headquarters to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday evening.

These rallies were initially planned to take place on Place de la République at 6 p.m. The calls to demonstrate came from the “National Collective for a Just and Lasting Peace in Palestine” as well as the “France Palestine Solidarity” association. Both organizations support the Palestinian cause and call for ending to the blockade of Gaza inflicted by the Israeli government.

The decision by the police headquarters comes as pro-Palestinian demonstrations have recently been prohibited in other French cities, notably Marseille and Lyon. These bans were justified by the risk of disturbing public order.

Despite the ban, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) held a rally in Marseille on Tuesday to voice its support for the Palestinian people in their fight against the State of Israel. Another gathering took place in Lyon on Monday, October 9, where around 150 people gathered on Place Gabriel-Péri despite the prefecture’s ban.
