Gaza: French Parliament refused minute of silence, Egypt imposes it at COP28

By:

On November 21, Mathilde Panot, the head of the France Insoumise deputies, expressed her dismay and indignation after the French Parliament rejected observing a minute of silence for the UN employees who died in Gaza due to Israeli military actions. This time, no one will be able to prevent this tribute to all the deceased civilians. This event is taking place at the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change – COP28 – this Thursday, November 30, in the United Arab Emirates.

The two-week debates kicked off in Dubai with a minute of silence for “all civilians who have died in the current conflict in Gaza.” The president of the previous summit – COP27 – in Cairo, Sameh Choukri, head of Egyptian diplomacy, conducted a small ceremony that certainly didn’t sit well with some.

Egypt hasn’t always been ideal in this matter, especially when it offered to welcome Gazans into the Israeli desert or closed the door tightly to them while foreigners and binational individuals could escape the carnage. However, Egyptian diplomacy is actively working to extend the truce between Israel and Hamas and is striving to ensure the release of hostages on both sides. This pause has helped avoid thousands of deaths, particularly on the Palestinian side.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, among others, cannot claim the same as Egypt. While Egypt and Qatar are working to address global issues, Riyadh is focused on securing the 2030 World Cup, envying the flawless World Cup hosted by Doha. While engaged in organizing the Football Festival, the Saudis also set their sights on the Universal Exhibition, which they ultimately secured in 2030.

This is what drives the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohamed Ben Salman: his influence and that of his kingdom, disregarding everything else, even the suffering of his Palestinian “brothers.” When this entire situation concludes, as all wars inevitably do, the Arab street will assess the aftermath. It will likely not be in favour of the Saudi “big brother,” and it’s not just him…
