GAZA: Nearly 5,500 women expected to give birth in coming month in ruins of Gazan hospitals

The war has continued in the Gaza Strip for over a hundred days, subjecting the area to ruthless bombings by the Zionist entity, notably targeting the health system’s infrastructure. Consequently, almost two million Palestinians have been displaced due to the onslaught, virtually cutting off their access to healthcare services.

Among the impacted Palestinians, the most vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, new mothers, and breastfeeding individuals, are especially at risk, left without medical care or support.

The United Nations reports that about 700,000 women and girls of childbearing age are now living in overcrowded shelters under dire, sometimes catastrophic, conditions.

It is estimated that over the next month, more than 5,500 women are due to give birth, correlating to about 180 deliveries daily. Furthermore, almost 840 pregnant women may face pregnancy or childbirth complications. With hospitals overwhelmed by losses and shortages of fuel, medications, and essential supplies, a significant number of individuals will lack access to safe childbirth services.

These alarming figures highlight the dire state of healthcare services in the Gaza Strip. They have prompted the United Nations to urgently call for a ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian and medical aid to the Strip’s vulnerable populations.
