Gender disparity in Tunisia: Women represent half of professional and technical workers

According to the 18th edition of the annual “Global Gender Gap” report issued by the World Economic Forum, Tunisia is placed  115th globally, therefore gaining 13 places compared to the year 2023. Its score of 66.8% testifies to an increase of 2.6% compared to the previous year.

Tunisia ranks second in the Middle East and North Africa region, after being fifth last year.

The report evaluates inequalities and the development of gender disparities in 146 countries based on four fundamental pillars, namely economic participation and opportunities, educational attainment, health and survival and political empowerment.

Note that IACE, the official partner of the World Economic Forum, developed the survey among the population questioned in Tunisia.

This report calculates the gender gap and does not take into account the degree of emancipation and empowerment of women. It does not measure total levels of progress or development of women, but rather the gaps between men and women in different areas.

The results of the report indicate that the participation of women in the labour market in Tunisia (138th) is estimated at 26.68% compared to 64.89% for men. Women represent 49.26% of professional and technical workers.

In terms of education, the results of the report show that Tunisia (106th) has reached parity in primary, secondary and higher education.

In terms of health, Tunisia, ranked 81st, has reached parity regarding the ratio of male and female births. As for healthy life expectancy, Tunisia is in 92nd place.

Regarding political emancipation, the report indicates that 36.36% of ministerial positions were occupied by women.
