Grand Tunis switches to Japanese-style transport and mobility, with support of JICA

A Master Plan focused on urban mobility in Greater Tunis is progressing steadily. On Wednesday, October 16, the Grand Tunis Urban Planning Agency (AUGT) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inked a key document, solidifying their collaboration. This initiative was supervised by Mongi Arfaoui, Director General of AUGT, and Miyata Mayumi, JICA’s Resident Representative in Tunisia.

Spanning three years, the project is developed to transform urban transport in Grand Tunis. The purpose is to strengthen the capacities of the organizations responsible for implementation. A comprehensive database will be set to monitor urgent actions and elevate the quality of urban transport in the capital.

The plan includes regular updates on traffic data, traffic lane organization, urban roads, public transport, and mobility management. The project will implicate multiple entities, including the Ministries of Interior, Equipment and Housing, Economy and Planning, Transport, Environment, the National Agency for Energy Management, and the municipalities of Tunis, Ariana, Manouba, and Ben Arous.

Miyata Mayumi, JICA’s Resident Representative, voiced enthusiasm about the collaboration: “As JICA, we are very pleased to contribute to this crucial project for urban transport in Greater Tunis. We hope the Japanese experience can inspire Tunisian authorities to find solutions tailored to the local context.”
