United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed on Tuesday strong concerns about what he calls an “age of impunity,” where governments and political actors act without facing consequences for violating international laws and norms.
During this opening remarks of 79th United Nations General Assembly debate, Guterres criticized the widespread disregard for international law, the UN Charter, and human rights. He condemns the way some governments and individuals seem to believe they can act without accountability, comparing it to a “get out of jail free card.”
He emphasizes that this impunity is evident across the globe, including in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, referring to ongoing conflicts, including the war in Palestine, Ukraine and the situation in Lebanon. “The level of impunity in the world is politically indefensible and morally intolerable today,” he stressed.
