Guterres urges all sides to avoid escalation in Red Sea

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday called on all parties to avoid actions that could lead to an escalation of the situation in the Red Sea, in a statement released on his official website.

“The Secretary-General calls upon all Member States defending their vessels from attacks to do so in accordance with international law,” the statement said, emphasizing that “attacks against international shipping in the Red Sea area are not acceptable as they endanger the safety and security of global supply chains and have a negative impact on the economic and humanitarian situation worldwide.”

Guterres also remarked the importance of efforts to put Yemen on the path to peace and emphasized that the work done so far to end the conflict in Yemen should not be lost.
