The news broke this Wednesday morning: Ismaïl Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political bureau, was assassinated in Tehran.
According to a statement from the Palestinian movement, Haniyeh was killed during an Israeli strike targeting his residence in Tehran.
Context of the assassination
Ismaïl Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president, Massoud Bezhshkian.
Hamas stated the attack happened around 2 a.m. local time while Haniyeh was staying at a veterans’ facility in Tehran. One of his bodyguards also died in the attack.
Details and ongoing investigations
Iranian authorities, through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, confirmed the assassination without disclosing the details. “We are investigating the dimensions of the incident,” a spokesperson stated, adding that the results of the investigation would be communicated later.
For its part, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that the attack was carried out by a missile fired from outside Iran. The Noor News site, affiliated with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Haniyeh had been targeted by an aerial munition, without specifying its origin.
Silence and speculation
Israeli authorities refused to comment on the attack. The Israeli army, usually discreet about its operations abroad, refused to answer questions from the international media.
Potential consequences
This event could reignite already high tensions in the region. Hamas and Iran have close ties, and this assassination could provoke retaliation. Meanwhile, speculation about the exact origin of the attack continues, as the world awaits the findings of the Iranian investigation.
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh marks a turning point in relations between Israel, Hamas and Iran. The coming weeks will be critical to determine the consequences of this act on regional geopolitics.
